Kanai Canadian Prime Minister: "No FTA with China"… Trump Draws Line with '100% Tariffs' Warning
Source: BlockMedia Original Title: Canadian Prime Minister Kane: “No pursuit of FTA with China”… Trump’s ‘100% Tariff’ warning clarified Original Link: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Kane stated that Canada has no plans to pursue a free trade agreement (FTA) with China, in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning of ‘100% tariffs’.
According to CBC on the 25th(local time), Kane told reporters in Toronto, “Recent actions with China are merely to coordinate accumulated issues,” and “We have no intention of signing a new free trade agreement with China.”
Kane explained that under the rules of the free trade agreement Canada has with the U.S. and Mexico, it cannot establish separate FTAs with third countries without prior notice to the other two. He added, “We will not pursue such agreements with China or any other economic bloc.”
This statement comes amid growing interpretations surrounding the recent high-level diplomatic exchanges between Canada and China. On the 16th, Kane held a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to China, declaring a ‘strategic partnership’ and agreeing to reduce tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and Canadian canola seeds.
In response, President Trump warned, “If Canada signs an agreement with China, I will impose a 100% tariff on all Canadian products,” and claimed, “Trade agreements with China would be a disaster for Canada.”
Kane reaffirmed that diplomatic relations with China would not undermine the existing trade order with the U.S. and Mexico, and emphasized managing diplomacy with China separately from trade relations with the U.S.
