Faroes Independence Dream: Trump Effect Strengthens Calls for Separation from Denmark

Abstract generation in progress

With a population of just under 55,000 on the Faroe Islands, a small community carries big ambitions. For decades, an increasing segment of Faroese society has been fighting for full political independence from Copenhagen. This struggle is now gaining momentum—not least because Donald Trump’s geopolitical plans for Greenland are causing cracks in Danish influence in the region.

The United States is showing increased interest in strategically controlling Arctic territories. This has an unexpected consequence for the Faroe Islands: their negotiating position with Denmark improves significantly. As long as the US and other major powers focus their attention on Greenland, the question of Faroese independence becomes a secondary issue—but this could also work to the advantage of the Faroese independence movement. Denmark must fear that other territories will demand control if the balance of power in the Arctic shifts.

Theoretically, the current situation of the Faroese autonomy movement could create additional room for maneuver. In practice, however, it remains unclear whether Copenhagen will make larger concessions under this new pressure—or whether it will tighten its grip on the two rebellious Atlantic territories even further.
