JUST IN: China faces a sustained decline in births and a rapidly aging population that threatens its productivity, its social system, and its ability to compete with the United States and India in the coming decades.


In 2025, fewer than 8 million babies were born in China, compared to 16.5 million in 2015.
The projections cited indicate that China's population could fall below 1 billion by 2080 and below 800 million by 2100.
