😰 3 C2C Withdrawal Scams That Hit People I Know
The longer I do C2C, the more I realize one thing—the platform itself isn't the biggest risk, people are.
Here are 3 schemes below. Each one has caused real people to lose real money. Read through and you'll be more vigilant.
❶ Fake Merchant Fraud | Money Transfers Out, Person Vanishes
Real scenario:
Xiaowang had been doing C2C on Gate for a while with a regular trading merchant. One day, he saw an account with the same name on a social platform posting an ad saying "old users PM me, I can offer higher buyback prices." Xiaowang thought it was his old acquaintance offering a discount, so he added the other person's channel for private trading and transferred USDT.
Result—the money never arrived, and the other person's account disappeared and was deactivated.
Why do people fall for it?
Scammers specifically register social media accounts using the names of well-known platform merchants, then attract you with "better prices" to trade privately off-platform. Once you leave the platform, there's no escrow protection—your coins go directly to them.
🔑 Remember: Anyone asking you to trade off-platform, no matter how familiar they are or how good the price, is a scammer.
❷ Black Money Deposits Freeze Cards | You Did Nothing Wrong, Your Card Gets Frozen Anyway
Real scenario:
Laoli sold some USDT, and the money arrived smoothly—he thought the transaction was done. 3 days later, he suddenly got a text from his bank: account frozen. He went to the bank to ask and learned it was a judicial freeze order from a local police department in another city—the buyer who sent him money had funds from a fraud case, and the police froze his card by following the money trail.
Laoli didn't know anything about it, but still had to spend over a month running between the bank and police station, submitting documents and cooperating with investigations before finally getting unfrozen.
Why do people fall for it?
The essence of C2C is person-to-person trading. You have no way to know in advance whether the other party's money is clean. Regular merchants don't have the capability to screen fund chains—receiving dirty money means taking the loss.
🔑 Remember: Choose merchants with platform verification and margin guarantees. The platform will do fund risk filtering for you.
❸ Romance Scams | The Slowest, Most Brutal, Stealing the Most
Real scenario:
Xiaomei met someone on social media who claimed to be a "Gate VIP who made a lot from crypto trading." This "friend" enthusiastically recommended a "platform internal high-yield investment product," saying only VIPs could participate. Xiaomei was tempted and transferred some money following the other person's instructions.
Shortly after, the person said "my account got frozen by Gate, I need to pay a defrosting fee to withdraw," and had her add a "Gate official" messaging account to continue communication. Xiaomei transferred several more "defrosting fees"... then discovered the account was never frozen—the other person was a scammer from the start.
Why do people fall for it?
Romance scams take time to build trust, using "high returns" and "internal products" to attract you, then using "freezes" and "fees" to keep asking for money. The more you trust them, the larger your loss.
🔑 Remember: Gate's official customer service only operates within the App and official website. Any "Gate customer service" on third-party social accounts is fake. No platform will ever ask you to transfer money to "unfreeze your account."
✅ One Last Thing: Choose the Right Merchant, Cut Risk in Half
After reading these 3 cases, you'll notice the root cause of many problems—not choosing reliable verified merchants to trade with on the platform.
When doing C2C on Gate, it's recommended to look for 🛡️ Shield Merchants or 👑 Crown Merchants:
• Passed Gate's strict KYC verification. Trading records and fund sources are all reviewed
• If your bank card gets frozen due to trading, you have dual protection—the platform + merchant both provide compensation. You don't have to bear it alone
• When facing risks, the platform provides order fund risk compensation—you don't have to tough it out alone
• Spend 10 extra seconds checking the merchant badge and save yourself months of trouble.
