You know what's wild? There's this whole backstory behind one of the biggest tech wealth stories of the last decade, and it starts with Jensen Huang getting a tattoo.
So here's the thing - back in 2014, NVIDIA's stock hit $100 for the first time. Huang was at some company meeting and someone joked about what they'd do to celebrate. Everyone was throwing out ideas like shaving their head, getting a mohawk, even a nipple ring. Huang just casually said he'd get the company logo tattooed. Turns out he actually did it.
Years later in a Fortune interview, Huang actually showed off the Jensen Huang tattoo and talked about how much it hurt. "I was crying like a baby. My kids were with me and they were like, 'Dad, you gotta control yourself.'" The guy who built one of the most valuable companies in the world was literally tearing up in a tattoo chair. He's mentioned since that the tattoo hurt way more than anyone tells you, and he's done getting more ink.
But here's where it gets interesting from an investment perspective. If you'd thrown $1,000 into NVIDIA stock right around when that Jensen Huang tattoo photo went public on Instagram in late October 2014, you're looking at something ridiculous. You could've grabbed about 216 shares at the split-adjusted price of $4.62. Fast forward to today and that's sitting at over $103,000. That's roughly a 10,000% return. For comparison, the same $1,000 in the S&P 500 would've turned into about $2,400.
Even if you waited until the Fortune interview in late 2017 when the tattoo story got more mainstream attention, a $1,000 investment would've grown to around $8,900. Still way better than the broader market's 83% return during that same period.
The wild part? Huang's wealth exploded right alongside the stock. In 2023 alone, AI hype pushed NVIDIA up over 200%, adding like $30 billion to Huang's net worth. The man went from a good CEO with a funny tattoo story to basically one of the richest people on the planet.
I'm not saying get a tattoo to celebrate your investments, but the Jensen Huang tattoo story is honestly a perfect snapshot of how much the AI boom has changed everything. NVIDIA went from a solid company to a $1 trillion+ beast, and it all kind of traces back to this one inside joke that Huang actually followed through on.
