U.S. FBI: Cryptocurrency fraud losses to reach $11.36 billion in 2025, hitting a new high, with seniors being the most affected

ME News Report, April 13 (UTC+8), the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center released its annual report, showing that in 2025, fraud losses related to cryptocurrencies reached a record $11.366 billion, up 22% year over year, accounting for more than half of the $20.9 billion total internet crime losses for the year. The center received 181,600 cryptocurrency-related complaints, up 21%, with an average loss of $62,600 per incident. Seniors aged 60 and above reported 44,500 complaints, with losses totaling $4.4 billion, an increase of about 56% from $2.84 billion in 2024. Cryptocurrency investment scams caused $7.2 billion in losses, the highest among all types of fraud. Scams carried out via cryptocurrency ATMs and self-service kiosks resulted in $389 million in losses, up 58%. In addition, the center for the first time included artificial intelligence as a tracking category, receiving 22,400 related complaints with losses of $893 million. (Source: PANews)
