XRP's Four-Phase Quantum Step.
The company behind XRP has unveiled a four-phase plan to address the quantum threat. The plan includes "emergency preparation for quantum day" as well as the recovery of funds through zero-knowledge proofs. The entire transition is expected to be completed in 2028.
This has mobilized many crypto projects, from Bitcoin developers to Ethereum and XRP. Most recently, the company announced a quantum-resistance plan for the XRP network chain that will last until 2028.
First, the emergency plan…
The company has also prepared an emergency plan for the eventual realization of the quantum threat, which is currently still theoretical. This phase 1 aims for the immediate transition of wallets. In this plan, old classical signatures will be immediately deemed invalid, and funds will be quickly transferred to quantum-resistant accounts.
Zero-knowledge proof technology will also be used to prove account ownership without revealing keys. So the company's first goal in the plan is to ensure an immediate transition in the event of a sudden and adverse situation.
Entire XRP Network Undergoing Review
The second phase involves reviewing the entire XRP network and preparing it for quantum threats… According to the announcement, this phase has already begun… This phase involves a comprehensive assessment of vulnerabilities to quantum attacks across the XRPL network. Collaboration is also underway with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NST), the US government's global standards agency for cybersecurity.
However, since quantum-resistant cryptography uses "larger" keys and signatures, the impact of this on the network is already being investigated.
Gradual Transition…
The third phase involves a gradual transition. Before switching to the new system, quantum-resistant signatures are planned to be tested. These tests are expected to be completed by the second half of 2026. The goal here is to facilitate the transition smoothly without disrupting the functionality of existing users…
Complete Transition Nearing Completion…
The completion of the entire process is projected for 2028. At this point, the XRP network will be fully utilizing "post-quantum cryptography" technology. All testing related to the new system will be completed here.
