Yesterday I went to the supermarket to buy some things. Originally I wanted to be low-key about it—put the items in the shopping basket and go straight to self-checkout.

I was holding some snacks, a tube of toothpaste, and a box of condoms, heading to the cashier.

The cashier was a woman in her forties wearing glasses. When she scanned that box of condoms, she paused for a moment, looked up at me, and said:

"This one is buy-one-get-one-free. Do you want to grab another box?"

I said: "No thanks."

She said: "The promotion ends today."

I said: "That's enough, really."

She said: "Young man, it doesn't hurt to stock up a bit."

Everyone in line behind me looked over to see what was buy-one-get-one-free, then pretended to look back at their phones.

I silently grabbed another box, stuffed everything into the bag, walked out of the supermarket, and stood by the entrance for a while, getting some air.

I felt like everyone on the whole street now knew what I had planned for tonight.
