The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture has announced that highly pathogenic avian influenza virus has been detected at a poultry farm in Iwate Prefecture. The chicken farmers at the site initially reported to local authorities on February 20th about ongoing poultry deaths that continued for several consecutive days.

According to Jin10, this marks the 20th avian influenza incident in Japan since the start of this season. Verification was carried out through field inspections and comprehensive genetic analysis of samples from the affected chickens at the farm.

On February 21st, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries officially released a public announcement confirming that testing results proved the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in the livestock population at the location. This discovery adds to the long list of poultry disease outbreaks occurring during the current reproductive season.
