Flow Protocol Update Agreed Upon by Validators, Network Enters Maintenance Phase
The Flow Foundation’s proposed protocol update has been unanimously agreed upon by network validators and successfully deployed on the mainnet, according to reports from late December. This consensus-driven approach ensures that critical network improvements receive broad stakeholder support before implementation.
Validator Consensus Drives Mainnet-28 Deployment
The update, identified as Mainnet-28, represents a coordinated protocol fix that required full agreement from the validator community. This unanimous backing from validators reflects the security-conscious governance model that Flow employs. By requiring validators to reach consensus on protocol changes, the network ensures that infrastructure improvements are thoroughly vetted before going live, reducing the risk of unexpected issues.
Network Status: Read-Only Mode Maintains Stability
Following deployment, the Flow network continues block production but is currently operating in read-only mode. While the network remains online and generating blocks normally, regular transaction ingestion has been temporarily paused. This maintenance state represents a deliberate design choice to ensure network stability during the protocol transition phase.
The read-only configuration allows the network to continue its core functions while preventing new transaction submissions that might interact with the updated protocol in unexpected ways. Transaction ingestion is expected to resume once the network undergoes complete validation and testing of the changes.
This carefully managed transition demonstrates how the Flow community’s agreement on protocol improvements enables smooth, coordinated network upgrades while prioritizing stability and security.
