(MENAFN) Johann Wadephul, Germany’s Foreign Minister, said Tuesday that while Berlin is open to dialogue with Russia on achieving a sustainable peace in Ukraine, it will not make further concessions.

Speaking at the Ukraine Forum “Cafe Kyiv” in Berlin, Wadephul emphasized that “First and foremost, it must, of course, be Ukraine that speaks. But we are also prepared to talk. But we will not arrive in Moscow and make further concessions. We will not do that.” He added that Germany expects Russian President Vladimir Putin to consider reasonable offers if a genuine willingness to negotiate emerges.

Wadephul dismissed internal calls from his party, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), to approach Moscow with ceasefire proposals, saying, “There is no shortage of channels for dialogue. But no channel helps if he does not want to talk.”

Ahead of a European Union foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, he reiterated that Germany will maintain firm support for Ukraine while increasing pressure on Russia, noting ongoing work on the bloc’s 20th sanctions package and expressing confidence in its eventual success.
