The negative energy relationship between Slovakia and Ukraine continues to threaten the region’s energy security. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has issued a strong warning: if Kyiv does not resume oil supplies by Monday, Slovakia will instruct its companies to temporarily halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine.

Warning of potential electricity supply suspension from Slovakia

According to RTHK, Prime Minister Fico spoke on social media over the weekend, expressing deep concern about the negative energy relationship Bratislava is facing. He emphasized that Ukraine’s actions have severely damaged Slovakia’s economy, including the long-standing suspension of natural gas supplies.

Fico stated that the annual losses caused by this negative energy relationship amount to 500 million euros. The recent halt in oil usage has further worsened the situation, adding additional difficulties for Bratislava.

Economic damages from Ukraine’s actions

The negative energy relationship between the two countries has deep roots. In the past, Russia transported crude oil to Central and Eastern European countries via a strategic pipeline called the “Friendship.” The main route passes through Ukraine to supply the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.

However, since September 27, the transportation of Russian oil through Ukrainian territory has been completely halted. This event has caused discontent in both Hungary and Slovakia, both of which blame Kyiv for the situation.

The Friendship pipeline and ongoing energy conflict

Fico declared that Ukraine is deliberately delaying the reopening of the pipeline as a political tactic. According to the Slovak Prime Minister, this action is aimed at pressuring Budapest, forcing Hungary to abandon its stance opposing Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

This is one of the most complex situations in the region’s negative energy relationship today, as political decisions in Kyiv directly impact the energy security of neighboring countries.

Slovakia and Hungary are directly affected by this negative energy relationship

The energy dispute exposes deep disagreements between Ukraine and two former allies within the communist bloc. This negative energy relationship not only affects the economy but also has clear political dimensions, related to Ukraine’s position within Europe.

The situation continues to develop, with Slovakia facing a choice between complying with Kyiv’s demands or protecting its own energy interests. This negative energy relationship will remain a focal point of regional negotiations in the coming weeks.
