IT Home, February 25 — Gaming media tech4gamers published a blog yesterday (February 24), reporting that Sony has been granted a patent for PSSR super-resolution technology. By introducing “real-time quantization” technology, it is expected to solve issues such as frame drops and internal rendering resolution drops in AAA games under high GPU loads.

IT Home note: PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony’s proprietary AI image quality optimization technology. It enhances low-resolution images to high resolution through algorithms, significantly improving game visuals without increasing hardware burden.

The patent description states that when handling heavy game rendering loads, the system often reduces internal rendering resolution or drops frames, severely affecting player immersion. To address this, Sony plans to introduce “real-time quantization” technology, allowing developers to avoid forcibly lowering internal rendering resolution to improve image quality and performance.

In terms of operation, when GPU load surges and frame rates decline, PSSR dynamically reduces the precision of the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) weights.

This dynamic “load reduction” on AI workloads has minimal impact on actual gameplay visuals but effectively maintains high internal resolution and stable frame rates. Once system performance stabilizes, PSSR quickly restores full precision mode, ensuring smooth visual experience even in fast-paced games.

Regarding implementation effects, this dynamic adjustment mechanism will greatly reduce or eliminate visual artifacts and other performance anomalies, making game visuals appear more natural. Sony points out that current mainstream super-resolution tools rely on pre-trained fixed-precision models, which often compromise frame rate and visual quality under high loads.

In comparison, PSSR dynamically switches between different CNN precisions based on GPU load and performance fluctuations, giving it a significant technical advantage over competing products.
