On March 10th, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Kang Kun hosted a routine press conference.

An Anadolu Agency reporter asked about the current situation in Iran, what China believes should be the next steps, and how to stop the conflict. For example, does China consider directly calling on the U.S. to cease the war and resume dialogue?

Guo Kang Kun stated that China is deeply concerned about the current tense situation in the Middle East. Recently, China has been actively mediating, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi holding phone calls with multiple foreign ministers to exchange in-depth opinions on the regional situation. At the Foreign Ministers’ press conference during the Two Sessions, Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that correctly and properly resolving issues related to Iran and the Middle East should adhere to respecting national sovereignty, avoid the abuse of force, uphold non-interference in internal affairs, resolve hot-button issues politically, and that major powers should play a constructive role and use their influence in good faith.

He also said that China’s Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, Zhai Jun, is traveling across the Middle East. The prolongation of the conflict and escalation of the fighting are not in anyone’s interest. China will continue to communicate with all relevant parties, including the parties involved in the conflict, strengthen mediation, build consensus, and promote de-escalation and cooling of the situation.
