French local elections have concluded. The highly watched Paris mayoral race shows, according to exit polls, that Social Party candidate Emmanuel Grégoire received 37.98% of the vote, leading the right-wing Republican former Culture Minister Rachida Dati by over 10 percentage points. It is believed he can win easily, continuing the left’s 25-year control of Paris city government.

Although the left-wing parties still have a solid voter base in Paris, in this election, candidates from the National Rally, La France Insoumise, and Horizons all advanced to the second round. Candidates from far-left and far-right parties achieved unprecedented vote counts to qualify, reflecting a further shift toward extremism in public opinion and a more fragmented political atmosphere.
