A wooden boat carrying dozens of asylum seekers experienced a disaster off the southern coast of Crete, with the boat capsizing as the climax of a series of tragic events. The disaster resulted in at least five deaths, and more than 20 people are still missing and being searched for.

Extreme Sea Conditions Trigger Maritime Disaster

The accident occurred on Saturday morning when waves reached heights of 2.5 meters and winds blew at force 6 across the waters. These extreme weather conditions created a very dangerous maritime environment for small vessels. Rescuers noted that the victims were in a critical situation as the maritime conditions were at the brink of safety.

Dramatic Moment Causing the Boat to Capsize

As rescue ships approached to evacuate, passengers on the deck reacted by moving to one side of the boat simultaneously. This movement caused a fatal shift in the center of gravity, causing the boat to lose balance and ultimately capsize. According to reports from the scene, about 50 people were on board at the time of the disaster. Greek Coast Guard officials estimate that panicked reactions from passengers played a crucial role in escalating the catastrophe.

Rescue Operations Ongoing Amid Challenges

A Panama-flagged cargo ship was the first partner in the rescue effort, successfully evacuating 20 individuals from the water. Greek Coast Guard and European Border and Coast Guard fleet units then joined the ongoing search and rescue operation. These teams found several victims’ bodies around the scene and continued expanding the search area.

Concerns Over Additional Victims

Local authorities expressed deep concern that the capsized boat may have resulted in more fatalities than confirmed so far. The numbers are still changing as bodies are recovered or identities of survivors are confirmed. The search operation is expected to continue for several days, involving international coordination to ensure no victims are missed.
