The French state postal service company La Poste and its subsidiary bank La Banque Postale experienced a large-scale distributed denial-of-service attack on the eve of the Christmas holidays, leading to a complete shutdown of online services. This rendered website access, mobile applications, mail inquiry systems, and even the digital storage platform Digiposte all unusable, while online banking services were effectively interrupted, causing significant inconvenience for millions of users.

On the day of the attack, La Poste in France stated that the collection and delivery of physical mail were still operational, and core financial functions such as ATMs, in-store card payments, and SMS verification transfers were also functioning normally. The company emphasized that customers' personal information had not been compromised. However, there have been actual service interruptions, including delays in package collection and delivery and temporary closures of some post offices, leading to increasing dissatisfaction among consumers.

The French prosecution has officially launched an investigation into this incident, but the mastermind behind the attack has not yet been identified. Observers have pointed out that, given the frequent cyberattacks launched by Russian-related hacker organizations within Europe recently, the possibility of their involvement cannot be ruled out.

The French postal service stated that as of the morning of the 24th local time, the distributed denial-of-service attack is still ongoing. Some online services have achieved limited recovery, but they acknowledge that the overall system remains unstable. The postal bank also announced that online banking services have been restored, but delays are still ongoing.

This network attack is not an isolated incident. The French Ministry of the Interior officially reported earlier in early December that sensitive email servers had been breached, and cyber attacks against critical national infrastructure have occurred multiple times. Increasingly sophisticated distributed denial-of-service attacks are directly impacting the functioning of the nation and the daily lives of the public.

According to the “2025 Internet Threat Report” released by the security service provider Cloudflare, 3.3% of global internet traffic this year was intercepted due to distributed denial-of-service attacks or network firewalls, with the frequency of large-scale distributed denial-of-service attacks rising sharply. In July, there was a report of a large-scale attack that shocked the global internet response system. The recent incident involving the French postal service occurred against this backdrop of global network threats, once again highlighting the urgency of strengthening the security of public infrastructure.
