Elon Musk questions ChatGPT safety, Altman counters Tesla autonomous driving risk escalation, AI and autonomous vehicle controversy fermenting simultaneously

On January 21, news broke that Elon Musk and Sam Altman publicly clashed this week on the X platform over AI and autonomous driving safety issues, bringing the safety risks of ChatGPT and Tesla’s autopilot into the spotlight simultaneously. Musk posted that “relatives should not use ChatGPT,” pointing to multiple allegations of unnatural deaths related to the chatbot; Sam Altman responded that OpenAI is continuously balancing user safety and product usability, emphasizing that ChatGPT has nearly one billion users, including many psychologically vulnerable individuals, and therefore the platform must establish multi-layered protective mechanisms.

Sam Altman also countered Tesla’s autopilot system, stating that he has experienced the feature himself and believes it still has a significant gap from safety standards in real-world driving environments. He also mentioned that Grok, an AI product from X, owned by Musk, is under investigation by regulators in Europe, India, and Malaysia for generating inappropriate content without permission, which is seen as a signal that AI governance issues are tightening across multiple jurisdictions.

Legal pressures around ChatGPT are mounting. Public records show at least eight lawsuits against OpenAI alleging that the chatbot amplifies psychological risks during prolonged interactions, leading users to extreme behaviors. OpenAI responded that its system actively recommends external help resources to high-risk users but is still upgrading protective models for teenagers and high-risk groups.

Tesla also faces lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny. A US court previously ruled that Tesla must bear some responsibility and pay substantial damages in a fatal accident involving Autopilot. US regulators are also evaluating the operability of its emergency door and driver assistance systems in accident scenarios.

This clash is also intertwined with long-standing legal disputes. Musk accused Sam Altman and OpenAI of deviating from their original non-profit mission and filed a lawsuit over their early donation of tens of millions of dollars. As AI safety, autonomous driving compliance, and regulatory scrutiny continue to intensify, the debate over ChatGPT safety and Tesla’s autopilot is evolving into a direct confrontation between technological governance and business strategies.
