Short videos have become the main battleground for content platforms worldwide. Recently, YouTube revealed that its short video product Shorts has reached an average daily viewership of 200 billion, indicating that short content is actively rewriting user viewing behaviors and creator management models. This figure not only highlights Shorts’ importance within the platform but also signifies that YouTube is gradually narrowing the gap with other short video platforms in terms of watch time and interaction density.

YouTube states that future Shorts content formats will become more diverse. This year, the platform will integrate different formats such as image posts directly into the dynamic information feed, transforming short videos from mere clips into a content gateway that encompasses visuals, text, and interactive elements. A platform spokesperson indicated that the actual rollout timing and operation methods of these new features will be announced later.

AI Tools Fully Penetrate Creation Process, YouTube Emphasizes “Assistance, Not Replacement”

As AI becomes an essential tool for content production, YouTube has introduced multiple AI features for creators, including channel analysis chatbots, automatic voiceovers, multilingual translations, and AI-generated editing tools specifically designed for Shorts.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan pointed out that, as of December last year, over 1 million channels used the platform’s AI creation tools daily, and more than 6 million viewers watched at least 10 minutes of AI-automated voiceover content every day.

Mohan emphasized that AI’s role on YouTube is “a tool rather than a substitute,” aiming to lower the barrier to creation and expand content reach, rather than replacing human creators’ ideas and creativity. Meanwhile, the platform continues to invest in creator monetization models, from shopping and brand collaborations to fan sponsorship features, hoping to sustain creator economy growth amid the rapid rise of short videos.

Side Effects of Surging Views, YouTube Faces AI Spam Content Head-On

On the other side of Shorts’ rapid traffic growth is the emergence of low-quality, highly repetitive AI-generated content.

In his annual open letter, Mohan bluntly stated that “AI slop” has become a problem the platform must address. AI spam content often features hollow semantics and similar formats, superficially compliant with technical standards but lacking substantive information and creativity, putting pressure on user experience and content ecology.

YouTube announced that it will further enhance its ability to identify and remove low-quality AI content on existing anti-spam and anti-clickbait systems, and plans to increase regulation of deepfake videos and synthetic media starting from 2026. Currently, the platform requires creators to clearly mark whether content is AI-generated or modified, and will remove “harmful synthetic media” that violate guidelines. It is also expanding facial similarity detection features to prevent unauthorized deepfake misuse.

Parental Controls and Product Adjustments Simultaneously Promote, Platform Reshapes User Experience

Besides content quality, YouTube is also adjusting product design to respond to concerns from parents and regulators about short video addiction. The platform announced it will strengthen parental control mechanisms, allowing parents to set time limits for children watching Shorts, even setting the sliding time to 0. Mohan stated that the platform’s core stance is that families should decide usage rules, not the government applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

In paid services, YouTube TV will launch highly customizable multi-screen viewing modes, with plans for over 10 segmented options covering sports, entertainment, and news content, aiming to find a new balance between short videos and long-form content. Overall, YouTube benefits from Shorts’ traffic surge but must also use systems and technology to curb the erosion of platform trust caused by AI spam content. As short videos enter the “200 billion views” era, content quality and governance capabilities are becoming the next key battleground for platform competition.
