India: The Growing Threat of AI-Based Deepfake Technology to Open Societies

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern over the rapid rise of AI-generated deepfake content and misinformation in the digital environment, warning that they pose a serious threat to open and democratic societies. He stated that current artificial intelligence tools can create highly realistic fake videos, audio, and images, making it increasingly difficult for people to distinguish between truth and manipulated content.

According to reports, Modi called for enhanced protective measures, including the application of digital watermarks and clear source verification standards to ensure transparency and authenticity of online content. He emphasized that without appropriate legal frameworks and technological solutions, misinformation could undermine public trust, cause institutional instability, and erode social cohesion. At the same time, he also specifically highlighted the importance of protecting children in the digital age.
