Vitalik Buterin said zk-SNARKs enable private verification and faster blockchain scalability.
He outlined off-chain uses like identity checks and algorithm verification without exposing data.
Buterin plans a privacy-focused, censorship-resistant upgrade layered onto Ethereum.
Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin spoke at the ETH ChiangMai togETHer event Tuesday about the growing impact of zero-knowledge proofs (zk). He explained that zk technology could provide privacy, scalability, and verification benefits for blockchains and extend to broader internet applications. Buterin emphasized that zk-SNARKs will continue to expand in utility over the coming years.
According to Vitalik Buterin, zero-knowledge proofs allow verification of computation without revealing underlying data. He noted the approach improves privacy and speeds up validation processes.
Buterin illustrated the technology using passports. Modern passports have embedded chips, and zk proofs can verify citizenship without revealing additional personal information. He added that scalability gains are possible by publishing hashed data instead of full datasets, maintaining privacy while reducing computation needs.
Buterin highlighted off-chain applications of zk technology. He cited examples like verifying open-source algorithms. He explained that zk proofs could confirm outputs match published hashes, ensuring transparency without exposing the underlying code.
He argued that zk can extend beyond blockchains into identity verification and large-scale computation checks. This capability, Buterin said, allows organizations and internet platforms to maintain security and efficiency while protecting sensitive data. He expressed confidence in the expanding adoption of zk-SNARKs over the next five years.
In addition, Buterin shared his plan for a “cypherpunk principled non-ugly Ethereum.” He aims to bolt this vision onto the existing system, integrating tightly while preserving interoperability.
Buterin said the approach focuses on system-wide properties like censorship resistance, zk prover friendliness, and simplified consensus mechanisms. He emphasized that Ethereum will continue evolving without fragmenting, building on its current infrastructure while adopting cypherpunk and privacy-centered features.
By combining zk technology with principled design, Buterin outlined a vision for Ethereum that strengthens blockchain privacy, scalability, and utility for broader internet applications.
