Odaily Planet Daily reports that according to The Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration is considering imposing new “national security tariffs” on six industries. Sources familiar with the matter say the scope of the proposed tariffs may include large batteries, pig iron and iron parts, plastic pipes, industrial chemicals, as well as power grid and telecommunications equipment. These tariffs will be levied under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. The new tariffs on the six industries will be implemented separately from the new 15% global tariff. It is not yet clear when the Commerce Department-led investigations into these tariffs will be announced or when the tariffs will finally be imposed. Section 232 requires a lengthy investigation before tariffs are imposed, but once implemented, the President can unilaterally modify them.
