英國前首相波里斯·強森（Boris Johnson）近日在《每日郵報》發表文章，直言比特幣是「巨大的龐氏騙局」，並以個人聽到的故事佐證：牛津郡村莊的一位退休老人在嘗試提款時損失約 2 萬英鎊，疑似遭遇詐騙。
強森質疑，為何要信任由匿名的中本聰所創建、毫無機構背書的系統？他更反問：「如果他們解密了加密貨幣，我們找誰負責？」他認為比特幣不過是儲存在一系列電腦中的一串數字，遠不如黃金或收藏品有實際價值。
但我們知道，強森以退休老人的詐騙案作為比特幣有罪的佐證，本身即存在邏輯謬誤。詐騙者利用比特幣行騙，並不等同於比特幣本身是詐騙，猶如電話詐騙不等於電話是騙局。
真正需要警惕的是假冒比特幣投資的詐騙行為，而非比特幣協議本身的設計架構。

迅速反應的還有 Strategy 執行主席、全球最大企業比特幣持有者 Michael Saylor。他在以龐氏騙局的定義正面拆解強森的指控：
比特幣沒有發行人、沒有推廣者、沒有保證回報 — 它只是一個開放的、去中心化的貨幣網路，由程式碼和市場需求驅動。
Saylor 的回應點出龐氏騙局的結構性要件：承諾高回報、依賴新資金流入填補舊投資人獲利，但比特幣的設計哲學與此截然相反：固定總量 2,100 萬枚、無中央發行機構、程式碼完全開源、任何人都可自願參與或退出。
