Gate News message, April 20 — A mass shooting and hostage-taking incident occurred in Kyiv, Ukraine on April 18, resulting in at least 6 deaths and over 14 injuries. The gunman opened fire indiscriminately in Holosiivskyi, a busy commercial district in the capital, before barricading himself in a supermarket with hostages. The suspect was killed during a police assault.
Four victims died on the street, one inside the supermarket, and another died after being transported to hospital. Video footage of the incident sparked public outrage after showing police officers abandoning a wounded woman and fleeing when gunfire erupted, leaving other civilians vulnerable to further attacks.
Ukraine’s Interior Ministry responded to the backlash, stating the officers’ conduct was “shameful and inappropriate.” The officials involved have been suspended pending investigation. The motive for the shooting remains unclear as authorities continue their investigation.
