Gate News message, April 17 — Peruvian President Jose Luis Bazaldua announced today that his government will delay signing a contract to purchase F-16 Block 70 fighter jets, suggesting the incoming government handle the final selection and procurement process. The $3.5 billion project, originally scheduled to include the purchase of 12 aircraft from Lockheed Martin on April 17, has been postponed.
Bazaldua stated that given the current government is a transitional administration with a mandate ending in July 2026, such a major military acquisition involving substantial national debt should be decided by the next elected government. The president emphasized the significance of deferring the decision to his successor.
U.S. Ambassador to Peru Bernardo Navarro responded angrily on social media, warning that if Peru negotiates “in bad faith with the United States and undermines U.S. interests,” the Trump administration will be forced to “use all tools to ensure the security of our nation and region.”
