Gate News message, April 18 — Slovakia will file a lawsuit against the European Union’s ban on Russian natural gas imports within the coming days, according to Prime Minister Robert Fico on April 17. Fico stated the decision “clearly violates all principles underlying the EU treaties” and argued that decisions on sanctions and foreign policy matters should be made by unanimous consent.
On January 26, the EU’s 27 member states formally approved regulations to gradually prohibit imports of Russian pipeline natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG). According to the regulations, a comprehensive ban on Russian LNG imports will take effect in early 2027, while the full ban on pipeline natural gas imports will take effect in fall 2027.
Fico contended that the sanctions decision should require unanimous agreement from all member states rather than being imposed unilaterally.
