Thailand Implements Military Draft Lottery as Border Tensions with Cambodia Persist

The conscription process requires eligible men to draw cards from a jar in community halls: red cards mean conscription into the Royal Thai Army for two years of mandatory service, while black cards exempt them. The dramatic reactions of participants—ranging from jubilation to devastation—have gone viral globally, with some comparing the scenes to the Hunger Games films. One conscript was even filmed twerking in celebration of exemption.

The UK is expanding its recall of former military personnel up to age 65, while the U.S. is automatically enrolling young men aged 18 to 26 into its Selective Service draft pool starting December 2026, as approved in the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. Neither UK nor U.S. policy constitutes full conscription.
