US Considers Lifting Sanctions on Eritrea to Strengthen Red Sea Influence

GateNews

Gate News message, April 23 — The United States is considering options to improve relations with Eritrea, a strategically located Red Sea nation, according to U.S. government statements on April 22. Masad Bloss, a senior advisor on African affairs to President Trump, is leading the initiative. Bloss has told foreign officials that the U.S. plans to begin lifting sanctions against Eritrea, though other officials indicated the administration is still evaluating the move and has not made a final decision.

The push comes as the Red Sea corridor has grown strategically critical following disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz since Iran-related conflict erupted in late February 2026. Eritrea controls over 1,100 kilometers of Red Sea coastline and possesses significant mineral resources. The country gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993. The Biden administration imposed sanctions on Eritrean government entities and individuals in 2021, citing human rights violations and alleged involvement in the Ethiopian conflict.
