A person who is rarely praised tends to value praise from others too much, believing that someone who says nice things about them understands them and is their benefactor. In fact, very few people praise a stranger without reason. Only when there is a purpose will there be action, just like a salesperson complimenting a customer on their looks and taste to make a better sale, not necessarily truly thinking the customer is that great.
