Canada’s political landscape is undergoing a major shift. In early 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau officially announced his plan to step down as party leader and will resign as Prime Minister after the party completes the election process for a new leader. This decision stems from Trudeau’s realization that if factional disputes within the party continue, he will no longer be the best candidate to lead Canada in the next general election.

Trudeau stated that he has always acted in accordance with the fundamental interests of the Canadian people and has long been committed to the development and strengthening of the middle class. However, he admitted that the challenges faced within the party make it difficult to lead the party to victory in the elections. Therefore, Trudeau will support the party in selecting a new leader through a strong and democratic national competition process.

In terms of administrative arrangements, Trudeau announced that work in the Canadian Parliament will be temporarily suspended until spring 2025. This suspension period provides ample time for the party leadership transition, ensuring a smooth transfer of power.
