The demonization of "puppy love" in Chinese society is the root cause of many psychological issues and pathological attachment patterns. I have found that the proportion of male students in China who develop a saintly-prostitute complex is extremely high, because the criminalization of early romance in the education system turns normal emotional needs into shame and a sense of "wrongness," feeling both longing and fear, both innocent and repressed. As a result, during the most important ages in high school and even university, the repression of love and sex prevents the formation of a natural and reasonable view of sexuality. Ultimately, either they go on blind dates after graduating from university, viewing romantic relationships as a life obligation; or they develop a rejection of love and sex, becoming atomized individuals.
