MicroStrategy Overtakes BlackRock in Bitcoin Holdings, Now Holds 815,061 BTC

BTC-0,57%

Gate News message, April 22 — MicroStrategy has surpassed BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust to become the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, with 815,061 BTC after purchasing 34,164 BTC for approximately $2.54 billion on April 20. The acquisition was made at an average price of $74,395 per Bitcoin, bringing the company’s total reserve value to about $61.56 billion.

With an average acquisition cost of $75,527 per Bitcoin across its full reserve, MicroStrategy has returned to profitability as Bitcoin recently moved back above that level. The company had faced unrealized losses earlier this year after Bitcoin fell below its cost basis in early February. Based on current market values, MicroStrategy now holds an estimated unrealized profit of approximately $242 million, though this margin remains narrow relative to the size of its reserve.

During the first three weeks of April 2026, MicroStrategy generated a 6.2% Bitcoin yield, equivalent to 47,079 BTC or about $3.6 billion at current market values. The company reported a year-to-date Bitcoin yield of 9.5% for 2026. CEO Michael Saylor uses Bitcoin yield as a performance metric, describing it as the closest equivalent to net income on the Bitcoin standard.

MicroStrategy’s 815,061 BTC holdings now represent over 4% of the total Bitcoin supply. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, previously the largest institutional Bitcoin holder, now holds 806,178 BTC. The company’s performance is highly sensitive to Bitcoin price movements; any decline below its average cost basis would return it to an unrealized loss position.
