Joshua Yabut, a Bitcoin Cash evangelist, stole an armored vehicle and took a joyride through Virginia in 2018, giving rise to one of the most memorable memes in cryptocurrency history. Let’s review what he did and how the charges against him were dismissed.
Bitcoin Cash’s Tank Man Revisited: Remembering Joshua Yabut’s Joyride Through Virginia
Joshua Philip Yabut, a 29‑year‑old Bitcoin Cash fan, may not be remembered by name alone, but he will surely be recognized for his actions and the meme he spawned.
Yabut, a lieutenant deployed to Afghanistan around 2009, became the star of his own drama when he drove an armored vehicle more than 60 miles on public roads while being pursued by law enforcement.

While the escapade was harmless, with the vehicle having no weapons apart from Yabut’s own pistol with no ammo, he was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, felony eluding police, and felony unauthorized use of a vehicle. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity, as psychological evaluations determined that he was “not sane” at the time the incident occurred.
In 2022, Yabut also faced a count of obstructing a rescue squad after allegedly obstructing paramedics and firefighters aiding a woman with a medical emergency; that charge was dismissed without prejudice.
The Birth Of A Meme
Before suitcoiners took control of the crypto narrative, the culture around crypto was managed by retail investors and memes. In this context, and in a culture war when Bitcoin Cash was still fighting to become the top cryptocurrency with BTC, the BCH community developed one of its most memorable memes.
A segment of a video, when the armored vehicle is cruising at full speed, was taken and modified, and a BCH logo was affixed to the side of the tank. Also, an image of Roger Ver, one of Bitcoin Cash’s largest supporters, was attached to the top of the tank, which threw glitter, producing a lasting, humorous moment in BCH history.
